Wireless Mobile Screens at newspaper outlets to help boost sales

M2M for pushing Advertisements to remote kiosks and mobile Screens.

The wireless, battery-operated systems featuring 32″ screens have been installed in Evening Standard sales booths at major “footfall” sites, including Euston Station, Fenchurch Street, Farringdon and Waterloo, as part of a major programme of improvements to the paper’s street presence.

The supplier, Comtech M2M (machine-to-machine), has also signed a contract for an indoor version of the “Extra!” system with Newsquest, to maximise on “queue dwell times” at newsagents.

The units can be updated at any time from advertising sales and news rooms using the system’s “Extralive” management service, without relying on a retailer’s own IT network infrastructure.

Remote wireless M2M connectivity to reduces costs

Came across this PR http://www.wyless.com/ - This tells us that the market for M2M services is expanding. This is not a pilot deployment of M2M on a few devices but the plan is to enable these services to 160,000 devices.

Wyless, the international wireless data communications group, has signed a deal with ABB Robotics to deliver a remote service which will enable production lines to maintain round the clock operation. Through the new remote service, provided over the Wyless global wireless data network, ABB is aiming to extend the uptime of its installed base of over 160,000 robots and lower the overall cost of ownership through pro-active maintenance and reduction in production disturbances.

The remote service package is based on the concept of logging a robot’s key performance data and sending this remotely to an ABB service center via GPRS technology. The robot will automatically be able to alert the central database, triggering an SMS to the on-call service engineer, who can then immediately access a detailed data error log and quickly identify the exact fault. At anytime and from anywhere, an engineer can verify robot status and access important maintenance information about a robot system by logging into the MyRobot ABB website.

M2M - Smart Grid

Results from a year-long study on high-tech electricity meters found smart grid technology performed as intended, saving consumers about 10 percent on their bills while easing strain on the power grid.

The Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest Laboratory on Wednesday released the findings from its GridWise project, which tested the use of Internet-connected thermostats and other controls in 112 homes in the Seattle area.

Consumers also tried out appliances, like water heaters and dryers, that were able to automatically change their settings according to signals sent by the utility over the power grid.

The trial showed that consumers are willing to have utilities remotely dial down the appliances to lessen the load on the power grid and reduce their consumption, said Rob Pratt, program manager at Pacific Northwest National Lab.

These changes could be as small as turning off the heat on the dryer while it continues to tumble for a few minutes. But those minute-to-minute adjustments, driven by the fluctuating demand on the power grid, can have significant benefits to utilities.

“We could save $70 billion in investments in the next 20 years by offsetting construction of new infrastructure that would otherwise be needed to meet load growth,” Pratt said during a teleconference with the media.

Smart grid technology would also provide more reliability to the power grid, allowing utilities to isolate problems more easily. Clean power sources such as wind and solar, which pose technical challenges because they don’t supply a steady stream of electricity, can be better incorporated with upgraded equipment, the study found.

The electricity infrastructure in the United States needs significant investment to be modernized, according to industry analysts. But utilities tend to be very conservative and unwilling to make large capital expenditures on new equipment.
